Technology Entrepreneurship
LECTURE 5
Many companies are set up to exploit new technologies. Often the usefulness of the technology is evident, and the innovation also obvious, but finding a suitable business model for technology is often quite a task. Also, a strategic approach is needed to protect knowledge and to stay ahead of the competition. The lecturer will explore these perspectives on technology-driven entrepreneurship in the lecture.

Ksenia Podoynitsyna

Dr. Ksenia Podoynitsyna is an Associate Professor of Data-Driven Entrepreneurship at JADS, the Joint Graduate School of Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology. She also serves as the Program Director of the master program "Data Science and Entrepreneurship"at JADS. Her research focuses on business models and ecosystems for data-driven and sustainable businesses, and employs a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. Combining scientific rigour with practical relevance, Ksenia is keen on doing research together with managers and entrepreneurs, which resulted in a number of research and teaching initiatives funded by the EU, EIT KIC InnoEnergy, Philips, and CZ Insurance among others. She co-developed two tools that allow to map, design and analyse business models and ecosystems, and that were explicated in publications in Long Range Planning and Journal of Cleaner Production. Ksenia has furthermore published in leading entrepreneurship and management journals such as Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and California Management Review among others. Ksenia got her PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology (2008) and her dissertation was nominated for the prestigious Heizer dissertation award of the Entrepreneurship division of the Academy of Management.
Alexey Nikolayev

Prof. dr. Alexey Nikolayev is an Associate Professor at Russian Venture Company Department of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). He has over 25 years of IT industry experience, working for such companies as Samsung Electronics, Intel Corporation, Align Technology. The focus of his work has been on Research and Development, Academic Relations, Startups Acceleration, Innovations and Entrepreneurship Education, Corporate Innovations fostering, and New Products Design among other areas.
Dr. Nikolaev created and introduced a series of project and team-based courses (so-called "anti-courses") that use active learning format, Customer Development and Lean Startup methodologies to provide engineering, design, and managements students towards hands-on and real-world innovations and entrepreneurship projects design experiences. He is also the author of a Coursera MOOC (massive on-line open course) on new hi-tech products design and marketing. Through his work, Alexey brings to Academia practical expertise for new technical startups and products launch, industry-university-startups collaboration models, as well as the most recent technological and hi-tech markets trends. Alexey delivers courses and extracurricula activities at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Moscow State University, and Skoltech, also in Moscow.
Alexey graduated from Moscow State University with a PhD in Physics, and University of California, Berkeley with Executive Education in Product Management, Lean Startup, Innovations and Entrepreneurship Education. He authored over 60 publications in Russian and world-wide scientific journals.
